About the Team:

Sparta United Women's Soccer Team 2009

The Sparta United Women's Team is part of the Sparta United Soccer Club which is a nationally recognized club with a 28 year tradition of soccer excellence.  Sparta is the largest, oldest, and most prominent competitive youth soccer club in the state of Utah as well as being one of 46 clubs in the United States recognized as a member of the prestigious Nike Premier Club.  The Sparta organization's mission is to provide serious soccer players the opportunities to advance to the highest levels in soccer.

Due to Sparta's reputation as a progressive soccer club, The Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) extended the invitation to the Sparta Club to form a women's team to compete in the southwest conference of the WPSL.

  • The WPSL is an independent national league formed in 1998.
  • The WPSL is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body of soccer in the United States and FIFA the world's ruling body for soccer.

Sparta accepted the invitation extended by the WPSL and formed the "Sparta United Women's Team" in the spring of 2008.  The mission of the Women's team in conjunction with the WPSL is to:

  • Develop a highly competitive amateur women's soccer team.
  • Provide a playing opportunity for elite women soccer players to play at the highest level.
  • Bring quality soccer to all levels of the community.
  • Promote the stature of female athletes as role models for our youth.
Since the Women's Team formation, we have competed with other teams in the WPSL that have been in place for many years -- last season the team successfully placed in the middle of the division.  Furthermore, we earned the respect of the WPSL staff by demonstrating true grit and determination in building the team from the ground up in a matter of a few months.  In 2009, not quite 1 year later, we had more women try-out for the team than we had spots available!  The talent of our players is incredible and we look forward to an exciting year.  2009 promises to be even better than 2008.  Go Sparta!

About the Coaching:

   Dennis Burrows -- Head Coach

Dennis has coached soccer for about 17 years; he holds both the USSF A License and NSCAA Premier Diploma.  Along with coaching the Sparta Women's team, he is an ODP staff coach, and is the Director of Coaching for the Sparta United girl's program. Dennis began his soccer career as a player; he played through the youth ranks here in Salt Lake and ended his youth soccer experience playing for Sparta United.  He then went on to play in the local adult premier division and coached/ran a men's team for ten years.  He began coaching youth soccer when his oldest son began playing at age five and it did not take Dennis long to realize how much he enjoyed working with players of all ages and abilities.  He has a true love of the game, is passionate about developing players to their fullest potential, and taking women's soccer to the highest possible level.
