About the Team: Florida Surge, which was started in 2008 to offer a higher level of play to up and coming talent in the Central Florida area as well as abroad was purchased this year by Florida Soccer Alliance. The Surge is still the strong core unit it has always been, but has a fresh new look, logo, and uniforms and from here on in will be known as FSA Freedom! Located just north of Orlando and Disney we continue to host a variety of job opportunities and local activities for players to not only improve their skill-sets by playing at a higher level, but enjoy their time here as well! About the Coaching: Head Coach - Kim Montgomery Kim played her college soccer at North Carolina State University. While playing for NC State the appeared in the NCAA tournament each year, making it to the final four once. Kim was selected to the All-ACC team in 1990, 1991, and 1993 and was a freshman and senior All-American. Kim is currently in fifth place in school history for points with 95, seventh in goals with 32, and third in assists with 31. Kim was recently named to the ACC's Top Women Soccer Players of All-Time team. Kim graduated with a degree in Health and Physical Education in 1995 and went on to accept a full graduate assistant scholarship at Virginia Tech. She was the assistant soccer coach for the Hokies for two seasons and graduated with a Master's degree in Health and Physical Education in the fall of 1996. After graduating, Kim returned to North Carolina where she taught public school health and physical education, coached youth soccer, and continued her playing career for the semi-professional Raleigh Wings. The Wings were coached by current UNC assistant coach, Bill Palledino, and won two of three National Championships. Kim enjoyed great success in the league, receiving league MVP honors in 1998 and leading the league in assists each year. In 2000, the WUSA (Women's Professional Soccer) was created. Kim resigned from teaching and was drafted in the sixth pick overall to play in the world's most elite women's professional soccer league. Kim played three seasons with the Carolina Courage, going from last place her first season to beating Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom for the World Championship her second season. Kim played two more seasons once relocated to Florida in 1994 for the W-league Krush who went to the final four and for the WPSL Strikers. Happily retired from competitive play Kim teaches public school physical education for Rock Lake Middle School, coach's premier soccer for FSA soccer club, and is the assistant coach for Lake Mary High School soccer team. Kim has been happily married to Monty for eight years and they have two beautiful daughters Carly and Madison, and a golden retriever Gracie. Assistant Coach: Melanie Sutherland Melanie Sutherland played Division I collegiate soccer at the University of South Florida from 2005 – 2008 in the Big East Conference. In 2007 she helped the USF team qualify for Big East post-season play for the first time since joining the conference. During her collegiate off season she played in the George F. O'Donnelly Cup 2008, the WPSL Florida Surge during 2008, and WPSL Tampa Elite in 2007. With the Tampa Elite, she helped them win the WPSL Southern Division Champions as well as advance to the National Semi-Finals. After her 4 years of playing at USF, she was the assistant coach along Denise Schilte-Brown in the 2009-2010 season. Fall of 2010, she tried out for the Women's Pro Soccer, Atlanta Beat, but unfortunately experienced an injury that prevented her from finishing the tryouts. Throughout her collegiate years, she studied Mechanical Engineering and plan to practice in the field of prosthesis. While studying engineering, she received the BIG EAST Academic Honors 2007 and 2008, as well as the BIG EAST Academic All-Star in 2005 & 2007.
